To date, two classes have completed the National Certificate in Ecotourism. This is the only course of its kind in the Country and provides an opportunity for rural tourism enterprises, agency staff and/or community groups to become familiar with the concept of Ecotourism.

This course was developed by James Hanrahan, lecturer in tourism in Sligo Institute of Technology in conjunction with the â€"Greenbox’. It has been delivered twice, and will be delivered again in 2007. This course aims to provide students with the key concepts and philosophies of ecotourism. It explains the foundations of ecotourism internationally and in Ireland, while also developing a critical awareness of economies, marketing, certification and management of ecotourism. Along with lectures, it includes 10 hours of visits and field trips.

Syllabus content:

    • Introduction to ecotourism
    • Ecotourism policy, organisations and the eco-tourist
    • Ecotourism development:

The first course was successfully delivered in the spring of 2006. It was delivered in the Organic Centre, Rossinver .   A graduation ceremony was held in October 2006, at Parkes Castle. This coincided with the launch of the EU Flowers. Representing tourism organisations and bodies such as Waterways Ireland, National Parks & Wildlife, Fermanagh Lakeland Tourism, Donegal Co. Council, The Organic Centre, Leitrim Sculpture Centre, Western Organic Network, Arigina Leader and the Greenbox, many of these graduates are policy makers who are driving the growth of ecotourism further throughout Ireland.
The second class to complete the course again consisted of tourism and rural development stakeholders from the region and beyond. The course was held mainly in the Field Studies Centre, Derrygonnelly with occasional classes in various other relevant places, such as Ard Na Breatha.   Tourism agencies were well represented, with Failte Ireland, Fermanagh Lakeland tourism and NITB all sending participants; likewise, the local tourism and rural development sectors were well represented; included on the course were a local organic producer, a restaurateur, a web designer and more. This class have yet to graduate â€" watch this space!
