Irish Architecture

Living Architecture Centre

The living architecture centre is an internet-based school of sustainable building design & construction, operated by Peter Cowman.

While the ideas within the Course have been developed in an Irish context, this fact, oddly enough, has ensured the usefulness of the material in a wider geographical context. Because house design in Ireland is so bad, all aspects of sheltermaking had to be examined and, creative, workable solutions had to be found to the minutae of the design and construction process. The curiously intact state of Irish intuition lent further assistance to this development simply because Irish people have such an innate sense of the importance of life itself.

The Course Design Programme is set out as a series of Steps which allows one to follow the design process easily and to make the best use of one's time and energy. This approach facilitates the creation of properly balanced designs that take full account of individual design objectives, harmonising these with the larger world. When the process of planning, investigating, learning and decision-making has been completed, only then is the plan of the building put together. This is in contrast to normal design practice where the plan is the first thing that is created. This can lead to insurmountable problems, as can be witnessed in many professionally designed homes.
