The Development Media Workshop is a not-for-profit organisation focusing on environmental and social issues, based in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.  To promote awareness about the habitats and species of the local environment, the workshop has developed a series of film-making, animation and photography courses that will responsibly take people into these habitats.  Through filming, animating and photographing, participants will learn about the species and habitats they encounter, and have the opportunity to discuss issues around conservation.

Participants will be provided with all the equipment needed for filming, animating and photographing.  All equipment is of professional standard.  At the end of the course, participants will take away their own specially packaged DVD of films and animations, or CD of photographs.

The course will run from two days to week long programmes, and will utilise different local environments depending on the seasons.  These environments will include Lough Erne and Wetlands, Cuilcagh Mountain, and Broadleaf Woodland.  Some courses will concentrate on 'fine art' style response to the environment through imagery, while other courses will focus specifically on documenting flora and fauna.  Species explored will include plants, moths and birds.

Certified Ecotourism

This package has been certified according to the Greenbox Ecotourism Standard which means that all the key elements of ecotourism are met as part of the experience.

Environment

Development Media Workshop is committed to environmental protection and have taken steps to ensure that environmental impacts are monitored and reduced at all stages of the writing, planning and delivery of courses.  As far as possible they promote eco-friendly accommodation, reduce waste and practice green purchasing.  Solar panels have been installed on the premises and a carbon offset scheme ensures that trees are planted locally to offset the carbon produced by each participant whilst undertaking a course.

Learning

Development Media Workshop is conducting research into the specific environments, and issues, of the local area.  This has included taking part in the "Habitats and Species Awareness" course run under the Fermanagh Community Environmental Awareness Programme which included an exploration of the moths, bats and biodiversity of limestone uplands.  In 2006 the company facilitated 52 young people to make a four hour documentary Environmental Films exploring 'Food' , 'Technology', 'Water and Wetlands' and 'Waste', and this was followed up in 2007  through the facilitation of the making of a 26 minute documentary exploring "Tourism and the Environment" in the Greenbox region.  In 2006 the large format 'Exploring the seasons' book was produced for use with primary school children.  The book included original ideas for interactive activities that would enable children to explore the four seasons of the natural world.

Conservation

Development Media Workshop is committed to conservation and is a member of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the Ulster Wildlife Trust.  Courses are designed to expose participants to key natural environments, and educate them about those environments and the threats to them. At the end of each year a film screening event is organised to showcase the most recent environmental films produced.  These events are open to the general public and are followed by a talk about the issues, species and habitats shown in the films.

Benefiting the local community

Development Media Workshop makes every effort to ensure that the enterprise has positive spin off benefits for the local community and this includes employing local people.  Over the last year the company has provided 50% of the costs for filming community gardening and schools gardening projects run by the Organic Centre in Rossinver. These schemes bring community people, and schools from different community backgrounds, together to undertake gardening projects.
