This modern bungalow is home to the Keaney family, who run a bed and breakfast on their working farm in the village of Kiltyclogher. This place name means 'stony woods', and is indeed within a stone's throw of the border with County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland. The woods in question, is the Kiltyclogher Forest, now managed by the Irish Forestry Commission, Coilte. Kiltyclougher is smack in the middle of two impressive lakes, Lough Melvin and Lough Macnean. Both of these can be reached by taking the Kingfisher Cycle Trail which passes straight through this charming village.
Kiltyclogher has a small population and, like many border areas villages, it depopulated during the years of conflict in Northern Ireland. Now, however, this area is a model of reconciliation and sustainable development. Kiltyclogher has joined efforts with the village of Cashel, County Fermanagh, just 5km apart, to achieve the best possible outcomes for their respective communities. This unique combination has created a working partnership known as the KiltyCashel Project, which aims to regenerate this border area and share its delights with tourists and visitors.
Some of the other delights in store include Lough Lattone fishing lake, and the waterfalls in the Sraduffy River just west of the village. One of the finest examples of sustainable tourism in the area is the Organic Centre in Rossinver, which offers courses in everything from organic fruit and vegetable growing to wood energy. The Oaks provides much needed accomodation for visitors attending one of the 150 courses on offer here.
