This is the only Irish EU Flower property to have a wood-burning sauna. Such inspired touches are part of the charm of Trinity Island Lodge, a lakeland retreat on its own forested island. Tom O'Dowd, the owner of this wood and stone restored barn, just seconds' walk from the shores of Lough Oughter, has also replanted and manages 200 acres of the woodland here, with indigenous broadleaf Oaks, Ash and Larch. So there is no shortage of wood for the sauna or wood-burning stove after a day's fishing, canoeing or swimming. The Canadian canoe is available free of charge to visitors, and is definitely the greenest and most fun way of heading into nearby Killeshandra to do a bit of shopping, to accompany your day's catch. Or hit the hills on one of the Lodge's bikes. Whichever transport mode you choose, this land of infinite lakes is impressive.

This was an island, but now joined to the mainland by a small road, constructed by Tom, in order that he could share this remote beauty spot, which has been part of his family farm and home for four generations. This is why he strives to protect it, and is committed to sustainable tourism so that generations to follow will get to enjoy it as much as he has. As well as its managed woodland, the Lodge has a windmill and solar panels to generate electricity and, in addition to the restoration of the barn, Tom has worked to preserve the ruins of the earliest inhabitants here; an Abbey dating back to 1237, built and inhabited by monks from the Order of Premontre. Closing the farm gate behind you, and walk the few kilometres down the laneway, past acres of wild garlic filled woods with badger sets and lakeshore wildlife, you see instantly why the monks chose it.
