This traditional bed and breakfast, in a family-run bungalow, which is nestled between the drumlins and lakes of County Sligo, is the home of Sheila and Pat Kerins. Although it is only 21 kms from Sligo town, this area, close to Lough Arrow, one of the largest lakes in County Sligo, is worthy of a visit in its own right. It is remote, quiet and full of hidden treasures. Such as the birdwatching, especially in Winter, when the Lough becomes a favourite spot for wintering ducks, such as Mallard, Wigeon, Teal, Goldeneye and the Red-breasted Merganser.
Visitors relax in the conservatory dining room overlooking the lovingly maintained gardens, for breakfast, where the Kerins use as much organic, Fairtrade and locally sourced produce as possible. Riverstown is the nearest small town, and home to the Sligo Folk Park. The Park also hosts the annual Riverstown Heritage festival at the end May, one of the finest festivals celebrating Ireland's cultural heritage. There are displays of vintage vehicles, horse-drawn coaches, traps and live threshing displays. There is also a wide range of local crafts on show during the festival, as well as displays of traditional skills, such as basket and creel making, butter making and tin smithing.
Walking is the most satisfying way of embracing the countryside around Hillview Lodge, with the Bricklieve Mountains nearby and many other walking routes which form part of the Sligo Way, one of the Waymarked Ways of Ireland.
